Every year around the holidays, somehow one way or another, we end up spending more than we should and are rather broke come January. It doesn’t help that we have birthdays, our anniversary and Thanksgiving in the few weeks leading up to Christmas Day, either. I am a planner while my husband is a procrastinator. Thankfully he has left me in charge of gift giving since we married and I’ve almost mastered this task.
Here me out.
This year, we aren’t going ANYWHERE before December. Meaning, no traveling in the fall. This usually starts our financial fiasco in the winter. The other night, I told my husband I really wanted to enjoy the holidays in our home (especially since it’s Chuchi’s first Christmas) without having to worry whether or not we are spending too much money. Traveling with young kids is not fun people. It’s a pain in my butt and I’m usually the one that gets shafted because I don’t get to relax in the midst of all the shenanigans. So this year, mama is going to truly put her feet up (maybe not to that extent) and enjoy her favorite time of year!
In comes another crazy, but very practical idea of mine. I’m already meeting my goal of gift buying this year by September (I can picture you gawking or perhaps laughing at me right now) so why not set money aside as well for random purchases or events that we always want to do?
My husband nodded his head and said that’s great idea…but…he didn’t sound as excited as I was at the thought of organizing this fall/holiday/fun task. Therefore, I decided to make it into a date night!
Well, sort of.
It’s kinda a date night if I’m offering him pizza, frozen hot chocolate and a Christmas movie! After of course, we make our financial plan for the most wonderful time of year. HA!
I’m sure many couples can benefit from this budget idea and who wouldn’t want to have a frozen hot chocolate on a HOT summer day, dreaming of cooler temperatures?
- 1/4 cup of chocolate syrup
- 3 packet of store bought hot chocolate mix
- 2 cups milk
- 3 cups ice
- 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream
- 1/2 cup of marshmallow fluff
- Chocolate sprinkles for garnish
- Place milk, cocoa mix, chocolate syrup and ice in a blender. Blend until mostly smooth.
- In a bowl, whip the cream until soft peaks form. Add the marshmallow fluff and whip until stiff peaks form.
- Grab the glass you will be using and drizzle chocolate syrup on the inside of the glass.
- Pour frozen hot chocolate into the glass and top with the whipped marshmallow cream. Shave some chocolate curls or chocolate sprinkles.
- This makes 4 generous servings!
Yes, every year we buy Disney ornaments…our entire tree is made up of it, including the star. 🙂 What’s not included in this picture yet, are Christmas photos, stamps, activities for the girls, last minute presents…
Once we had our list, we decided to divide the amount by the amount of paychecks we have between now and November. I have an envelope ready to go, because we opted to do the amounts in cash…come December, we have our budget ready for us!
Taking pictures at night when the lighting is horrendous was not fun, it doesn’t, however, change how delicious this was and that it was a legit date night for us.
We watched Serendipity, very appropriate for frozen hot chocolate and not too over the top Christmas…but honestly, I think we would have been fine watching Elf, too! 🙂
